A sharp pain in chest area could turn out to be non-heart related. Numerous calls for emergency medical assistance are made because of a person experiencing sharp pains in his or her chest area. When this happens people automatically assume that the person is suffering a heart attack or some serious condition directly related to the heart. Although a stabbing pain in the chest area is indeed a symptom of a myocardial infarction more commonly known as a heart attack, it can also be a symptom of conditions other than a heart ailment.

Pleurisy is a condition that can also cause a sharp stabbing pain around the sternum area. This happens when the two tissue layers that makeup the pleura rub together. Generally the fluid in between the layers prevents any friction and therefore no pain is experienced. If the layers become inflamed or irritated however due to an infection then the layers may rub together. A broken or fractured sternum is also known to cause a sharp pain in the chest area. A car accident is the usual cause of a broken breastbone or sternum. Chest pains can be caused by any number of conditions that may not include our heart. It is always best to consult your doctor to better identify the real cause of your condition.
